JetstreamHD players soon available for Mac, iPhone and iPod.

A lot of you have requested the ability to view your media on other Apple devices in addition to the iPad.  The good news is that we will shortly release a version of the JetstreamHD server software with a beta version of a web server that will allow you to browse and play out all your media using the Safari browser on an iPhone, iPod or Mac.

You will still need the iPad JetstreamHD app to set up the JetstreamHD and assign media, but once it is set up, all your media including live HD TV will be available through the web browser on your iPhone, iPod or Mac.  Windows PC’s do not yet support HTTP Live Streaming and are not supported with this release.

As the web based players are not native apps, the navigation is still fairly basic.  We will be enhancing them using HTML5 in the future.

How to build your own iCloud

Many of us are attracted to the idea of storing our media in iCloud but may be concerned about privacy issues, storage and subscription costs.

The promise of the iCloud is to remove the PC from the center of your personal media universe and replace it with the Cloud.  All your media moves into iCloud and is streamed to each device that wants to access it on demand.  This sounds like nirvana: add media once to any device and it is available on all devices wherever you are.  However, the reality is a lot different.   With all the hype you would assume iCloud supports all of your media, but the reality is that only music and photos are currently supported, and even then there are some significant limitations.

Your video is not supported at all.  Any video you own must still be manually converted, synchronized and downloaded to each device, a process that takes many hours per video.  iTunes can stream video over local WiFi, but if you are out of your home, you are out of luck.   Even if iCloud was able to manage your video, it would take months or years to upload even a modest sized video collection.

Music has received the most attention in iCloud and Apple has developed an elegant solution that scans and matches the songs in your collection so that only the songs that are not included in their database are uploaded.  But there is a small catch; You have to pay an annual subscription to do it and the music is still stored on each device.  iCloud only synchronizes music between devices, each song is still downloaded to each device and consumes valuable flash storage.

Photos are also problematic.  iCloud synchronizes photos taken on your Apple phone or tablet across all your devices using photo stream, but you are limited to accessing only 1,000 photos at a time.  If you already have a large collection of photos from your digital camera you are also out of luck.

Fortunately there is a better solution.  Turn your home into your own private Cloud and stream your media to any device that wants it, when, and wherever it is needed.  That way, you can keep your media where it is, on a USB Drive, PC, MAC, NAS or Media server, in the best possible quality.  Your private Cloud understands where your media is and how to deliver the media to the device you want to watch it on in the best format and resolution for that device.    The end result is that you can instantly enjoy all you media, no matter how much you own on any devices no matter where you are over any WiFi or 3G wireless connections.

The best news is that all of this is possible using the JetstreamHD mobile media streamer.  By simply attaching the JetstreamHD to your network, you can effectively create a private cloud of your own, that streams all your photos, music and video to your mobile device or TV on demand when and wherever you need it.  The JetstreamHD takes care of any necessary format conversions and adapts the media to the needs of the device and to the available bandwidth.  The first supported mobile device is the iPad.  The app is available in the App store as a free download and features a beautiful user interface with cover art, plot synopsis, genre and advanced sorting, filtering and search options to allow you to quickly browse and select the media you want to enjoy.  You can get more details on our web site at www.JetstreamHD.com.

Turbocharge your Apple TV

If you have purchased a second or third generation Apple TV box you have probably realized that it is not as easy to enjoy your own video as it is to purchase content from iTunes or to watch video from Netflix and YouTube.   Enjoying your videos on your ATV means that they first must be loaded into iTunes.    For most video, this means converting the file to iTunes format using a third party tool like Handbrake, a process that can take hours for each file.

For those of us with an existing library of DVD’s, Blu-ray or home video, this can be a significant issue.  While programs like Handbrake can help to automate the process by converting files in batch mode, even a small library can take days to process and you are still faced with the ugly situation of having multiple copies of the same file.

Ideally, it would be best if you could play your videos directly on your ATV without having to convert them first.  Fortunately, if you have an iPad, there is a product that makes watching your video on an ATV easy.  It is called the JetstreamHD mobile media streamer, and together with the AirPlay function built into your iPad and ATV, it allows you to watch any video on your iPad or ATV without any conversions, syncing or downloading.

By simply attaching the JetstreamHD to your network and downloading the JetstreamHD app to your iPad, you can stream all your video to your ATV on demand when and wherever you need it.  The JetstreamHD takes care of any necessary format conversions and streams the video instantly to your iPad or to your ATV using AirPlay.   Your video can be located on any PC, Mac, Media server or NAS in your home network.

The app is available in the App store as a free download and features a beautiful user interface with cover art, plot synopsis, genre and advanced sorting, filtering and search options to allow you to quickly browse and select the media you want to enjoy.

With the JetstreamHD there is no need to import your media into iTunes.  The JetstreamHD converts media on the fly and does not take up any valuable flash storage space on your iPad.  In addition to supporting multiple ATV boxes in your home network, the JetstreamHD can stream all your media to your iPad both in and outside your home.  As long as you have an internet connection, every video, song, and photo you own is instantly available on your iPad wherever you are.  Add the USB tuner option and you can watch live HD TV. You can get more details on our web site at www.JetstreamHD.com.

Live HD TV

We are just finishing up the development of the Live HD TV option.  For those of you that did not see the CES post with the spot from “The Verge”, Live TV uses an optional USB Tuner stick to tune in live HD signals either over the air using an antenna or over cable for encrypted (Clear QAM) channels.  The Tuner stick plugs into the back of the JetstreamHD and lets you watch local channels on you iPad wherever you are.  We are expecting to get this out in early March along with the fix for shared folders on MACs.

Why iCloud is not myCloud

If you are like me, you have a lot of media stored in your home network, most of which is video.  I actually have over 5 terabytes of video that I have patiently ripped from my DVD and Blu-ray collection together with a growing library of home movies, mostly in HD.    I also have an extensive collection of photos and a reasonably large music collection.  So I was very interested in understanding what iCloud could do to make my life less complicated and to make my media available anywhere, any time on all of my devices.

I should also say, that while I love Apple’s products, I am not a total Apple fanboy and use a PC and a WD media adapter in addition to lots of non-Apple tools like Picasa to display and manage my media.   So, would iCloud work for me?

The promise of iCloud is to remove the PC from the center of your personal media universe and replace it with the Cloud.  This implies that all your media moves into the Cloud and is synchronized or streamed to each device that wants to access it.

iTunes is the first Apple service to fully exploit this capability, but to make it work Apple had to overcome a major problem: how to get all that music into the cloud in the first place.  My music collection is 22 gigabytes.  What many people do not realize is that while we may have a 10 Mbps broadband connection, it is asymmetrical.  We may get 10 Mbps down but most of us only get 500 Kbps to 1 Mbps up into the network.    For my 22 Gig music collection, this means it would take 3-4 days to upload.  Apple’s elegant solution to this is to scan and match the songs in your collection so that only the songs that are not included in their database are uploaded.  But there is a small catch: I have to pay an annual subscription to do it.

Unfortunately, this does not work for video.  There is no scan and match service for video, and because commercial movies are much more valuable than songs and are protected by DRM, it is unlikely there ever will be one.  That means for my video collection which is 5 TB, it would take over a year to upload all my content into the iCloud.  This is obviously impractical, so iCloud is unlikely to solve the problem for the video I already own.  It is far more likely that iCloud will be restricted to video purchased from iTunes.

I have the same problem for photos.  While Photostream will ensure that the pictures I take are uploaded to the iCloud, it is less clear what happens to my existing collection.  Apple only promises to make the last 1,000 photos available on each device.  My photo collection is 6 Gig which surpasses the free 5 Gig limit on all iCloud content.

So what alternatives do I have?  What I would really like to do is to turn my home into myCloud and stream my media to any device that wants it, when and wherever it is needed.  That way I can keep my media where it is, on my PC, MAC, NAS or media server, in the best possible quality and optimum resolution.  myCloud would understand where my media is and how to deliver the media to the device I want to watch it on in the best format and resolution for that device.    The end result is that I can instantly enjoy all my media,  no matter how much I own, on any of my devices no matter where I am, over any WiFi or 3G wireless connection.  There is also the advantage that I can continue to keep my media where it is and use the tools I have been using.

The good news is that all of this is possible using the JetStreamHD mobile media streamer.  By simply attaching the JetStreamHD to my network, I can effectively create a personal “myCloud” that streams all my photos, music and video to my mobile device or TV on demand when and wherever I need it.  The JetStreamHD takes care of any necessary format conversions and adapts the media to the needs of the device and to the available bandwidth.  The first supported mobile device is the iPad.  The app is available in the App store as a free download and features a beautiful user interface that is media aware with cover art, plot synopsis, genre and advanced sorting, filtering and search options to allow you to quickly browse and select the media you want to enjoy.  You can get more details on our web site at www.jetstreamhd.com.

Nuvyyo on CTV Tech Now

On Sunday November 28, Nuvyyo was featured on CTV’s Tech Now TV show. Here’s a small sample from the interview:

“Nuvyyo, a new Ottawa company, captures a lot about the tech scene in the region. Nuvyyo employs former Nortel employees, and started on a shoestring budget. The company also has a great idea: let you access all your personal media—like photos and movies—no matter where you are via a mobile device like the iPad.”
